More than 11 years after the World Trade Center attacks, the first payments from the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund are going out.

Fifteen first responders, mostly firefighters, are being informed they can get initial payouts.

Everyone in the group became sick after being exposed to toxic dust at the World Trade Center site.

They're all receiving payouts between $10,000 and $1.5 million.

If the recipients don't agree with their award amount, they can file an appeal.

If they do agree with it, they'll still only get 10 percent of the award for now because officials don't know how many people will apply for money from the fund before the 2016 cutoff.

If the payouts exceed the $2.8 billion in the fund, everyone will end up with less money than they were initially awarded.
