A young girl's rise in the music industry and the struggles of a single father are explored in a new documentary titled "P-Star Rising" at this year's Tribeca Film Festival. NY1's Shazia Khan filed the following report. At 2 a.m., a time when most kids are snug in their beds, eight-year-old Priscilla Ruiz could be found performing at clubs under her stage name P-Star, rapping, dancing and moving a crowd more than twice her age.
This young, Bronx-born talent is the subject of a new documentary called "P-Star Rising." Director Gabriel Noble explains the film is as much about fame and fortune as it is about family.
It tells the story of Jesse Diaz , a single, financially strapped father struggling to raise his two daughters, Priscilla Star and Solsky in Harlem. Through Priscilla, Diaz gets a second chance to pursue his own hip hop dreams.
"He left the music biz to raise his kids, the mother was an addict and when Priscilla was eight, she came to him and said dad I want to bring you back, I want to become a rapper and you can be my manager and there was something about this story that seems both phenomenal and potentially disastrous," said Noble.
The film follows the Diaz family for four years, highlighting the up and downs of a struggling artist and a single parent.
"I learned from my mom because my mom was a single parent as well how to become mommy and daddy and they learned that I became mommy and daddy I would do everything for them I would cook for them, I would wash their clothes," said Jesse Diaz.
At the end of the film, P-Star is a teenager who continues to grow in the entertainment industry.
"I want kids or whoever watched this movie to be inspired and to know that I've been through so much and yet I never gave up," said Priscilla Diaz.
"P-Star Rising" is playing as part of the Tribeca Film Festival through May 2nd. For more information, visit www.tribecafilm.com.
