NY1 VIDEO: As NY1 revisits its 20-year history, the station looks back at reporter John Schiumo's July 27, 1998 interview with the parents of Sang Lan, a teenage gymnast from China who damaged her spine while warming up for competition at the Goodwill Games in New York.

NY1 FOLLOW-UP: Despite months of rehabilitation at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Sang Lan remains paralyzed below her chest. However, she has regained some use of her arms and hands. Today she is a media personality and advocate for the disabled in her native China.
