NY1 VIDEO: Back in April 1999, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Schools Chancellor Rudy Crew got into a public war of words over the mayor's push to institute school vouchers and to abolish the Board of Education. Things went from bad to worse when Giuliani said he wanted to blow up the BOE and Crew responded with a harshly worded and widely publicized letter. NY1's Kerry Lyon filed this report at the time.

NY1 FOLLOW-UP: Eight months later, the Board of Education would vote not to renew Crew's contract. Crew became the superintendent of the Miami-Dade County School District in 2004, but he was pushed out in 2008 after clashing with the school board, despite being named National Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators. He recently took a position as president of a California company that provides educational software.
