NY1 VIDEO: The morning of September 3, 1998, New York City woke up to the news that SwissAir Flight 111 had gone down during its regularly scheduled route from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Geneva, crashing into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Nova Scotia and killed all 229 people on board. The day after the crash, NY1's Paul Lombardi went to the United Nations to speak with those who had known Flight 111's victims.

NY1 FOLLOW-UP: Canada's Transportation Safety Board led the investigation into why Swissair Flight 111 went down. It ultimately found that a fire started by internal wiring caused a loss of control by the flight crew. The crash led to several major changes in FAA rules regarding fire-proofing and electrical systems inside commercial aircraft.
