NY1 VIDEO: As NY1 revisits its 20-year history, the station looks back at reporter John Schiumo's June 1, 1997 coverage of the vigil surrounding Malcolm X's widow Betty Shabazz who was badly burned in a fire at her Yonkers home.
NY1 FOLLOW-UP: The tragedy would be compounded when it was learned that Shabazz's 12-year-old grandson, Malcolm - who had recently been sent to live with her - set the blaze. Betty Shabazz died three weeks later. Malcolm Shabazz was sentenced to 18 months in a juvenile facility, although his sentence was extended after several escapes from custody.
