The H1N1/swine flu virus may infect up to 40 percent of Americans over the next two years.
That worst-case scenario comes from federal health officials, who say as many as several hundred thousand people could die if a vaccine or other measures are not successful.
Estimates from the Centers for Disease Control say about twice the number of people who usually get the flu will be infected with H1N1.
The United States may have as many as 160-million doses of the vaccine by October. Tests on it are scheduled to begin shortly.
According to the American Medical Association, about 36,000 people die from the seasonal flu each year.
So far, more than 260 people have died in the U.S. from H1N1.
