Fashion Week 2012: J. Crew, Lacoste Present Reinterpretations Of The Past

The design teams at J. Crew and Lacoste turned to the past to inspire their fall collections. NY1's Jessica Abo takes us to Fashion Week.J. Crew's design team turned back the clock for its Lincoln Center show. Come fall, you'll find rugged looks inspired by Ernest Shackelton's 1914 Antarctic expedition paired with polished pieces influenced by a portrait of poet Edward James.
"We always look at historical references but I think the more interesting part is to make it more modern again," said Frank Muytjens, J. Crew's head of men's design.
To update every woman's closet, head of women's design Tom Mora turned to Irving Penn's photographs to make the presentation pop.
"This collection is beautiful but when it all comes down, you make these pieces a part of your wardrobe and have them forever," said Mora.
"If you look at a lot of the pieces, they are things we've done previously, whether it's the skinny calf capri pant or turtlenecks. It's all about how they're paired together," said President and Creative Director Jenna Lyons.
So get ready to have some fun this fall mixing tones of colors, patterns and accessories.
"There are no rules. No, no, no," said Mora.
And if it's been a while since you sported the crocodile, Lacoste's fall winter line up has just the looks you need if you want to look good when you're bundled up or headed down the slopes.
"It's a whole take on ski because Lacoste they dressed the French team in the late '60s, so I found these amazing jumpers in the archive and that was the starting point of all of that, and photos from the '30s of the Lacoste family," said Lacoste Artistic Director Felipe Oliveira Baptista.
While this cutting-edge collection has an urban twist, there are plenty of whites, reds and gray hues to help beat the winter blues.
"I'm a West Coast guy, so being in New York for so many months Lacoste gives you a chance to change the pace," said Ramses Barden of the New York Giants. "And sometimes I think it looks good on me."
Those who want to go out in "breaking dawn" to hit the slopes and still want to look good come "twilight," Lacoste's cozy cashmeres and turtlenecks and knits looks will do the trick.
"It's always fun to show support. I grew up loving Lacoste and the croc for sure," said "Twilight" actor Kellan Lutz.
With this collection, you can rock the croc all year round.
