From under the sea to the dawn sky, two high-profile designers take their inspiration from nature for their spring collections. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report from the Catherine Malandrino and Yeohlee shows.Fashions inspired by the sea were the catch of the day at the Yeohlee show. The designer casts a wide net of shapes – including the silhouette of the jellyfish.
"You had some rigidity, some bubble shapes, and some short skirts that were really parabolas," said designer Yeohlee Teng.
Diving into this collection, fashionistas will find fishnet dresses, linen trousers, and tops that give the girls gills.
Water is the theme, and Yeohlee included rainwear, too, saying she's hooked on looks that combine style and function.
Meanwhile, as designer Catherine Malandrino's spring collection at the Chelsea Art Museum, there was not only plenty of pomp and circumstance, but there was also a female pompadour.
Backstage, excitement was piling high – and so was the hair.
"It's a beautiful, feminine idea of a pompadour," said Eva Scrivo, lead colorist at Wella. "That is kind of reminiscent of the 1940s and 1950s. It's very highly stylized, very glamorous."
On the runway, it was all about high fashion.
Malandrino used a neutral palette to present a delicate collection inspired by dawn and the promise of each new day.
"I feel that in the dawn it's a very special moment, when you feel that everything could happen to you," said the designer. "It's about a woman who starts her day with high spirit."
Models stepped out in jersey and jacquard dresses, veiled with lace and tulle. Other ensembles glowed with jeweled tops and belts, high-waisted shorts, and sleek jumpsuits.
Actor Ana Ortiz says it was a real treat, since her character on the television show "Ugly Betty" does not get to indulge in the TV show's serious style.
"I'm backstage and have to watch the famous designers go by and I'm wearing clothing from Forever 21, so this is great opportunity for me," she said.
