Some African designers took the New York fashion world by storm at the Fashion Week. NY1's Cheryl Wills filed the following report from the ARISE show. A group of four designers all from different countries in Africa showed off their spring 2010 collection at the tents under Bryant Park earlier this month.
The show, titled ARISE: Promise of African Collective, kicked off with "Jewel by Lisa," which features lots of thigh-high dresses that screamed "power."
"Very bold and beautiful, that's what I think about all the collections," said model Gigi. "Very bold and beautiful colors, nice fabric, and great patterns."
Next up was the Tiffany Amber collection, marked by flowing gowns and vibrant colors.
"This collection was born in Africa and I didn't want to use traditional African fabrics so I worked with one of the biggest artists in Africa, I took one of his paintings, printed it on fabric and built my collection around that," explained Tiffany Amber designer Folake Folarin-Coker of Nigeria.
Designer Eric Raisina, who hails from Madagascar, he says his homeland inspired his feminine line that dares to go red.
"My collection is all about Afro unity, which you can feel when you are in Madagascar," he said.
And David Tlale's South African-inspired collection is also a standout with gold-toned fabrics.
"More than anything else, we don't really focus on what other people are doing because we believe our pieces are timeless," said Tlale.
Supermodel Tyson Beckford said he felt a special sense of pride while walking in the show.
"It just feels like the greatest designers in the world are in Africa. It's like walking with your peers and your friends," he said. "So it's always a good show."
The designers hope that the audience felt the same way.
