President Barack Obama met with young inventors today at the first-ever White House Science Fair.
The winners of top national science, technology, engineering, and math competitions showed off their projects and experiments. These included solar-powered cars and water purification systems.
Obama says this event is important, because scientific accomplishments often don't get the attention they deserve.
"When you win first place in a science fair, nobody's rushing the field or dumping Gatorade over your head,” said the president. “But in many ways, our future depends on what happens in those contests; what happens when a young person is engaged in conducting and experiment or writing piece of software or solving a hard math problem."
NY1's parent company, Time Warner Cable, is also involved through its "Connect a Million Minds" initiative, which encourages school programs designed to boost learning in science and math.
