2008 In Review: Fashion Industry Holds Its Own

After a five-year absence from the runway, bad boy Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs was back, celebrating 10 years as a designer at Cipriani 42nd Street in February.

From balloons to a DJ, backstage at Betsey Johnson's shows is always a party. But this year, the whimsical designer had much to celebrate -- 30 years in the fashion biz.

Queen's native Donna Karan toasted to two decades of DKNY as she unveiled her spring line under the big top in Bryant Park in September.

Off the runway, A-list celebrities like Brooke Shields hit the red carpet to commemorate designer Calvin Klein's 40th anniversary. The big bash was held this past september at the soon to be opened High Line park.

For his fall 2008 show, Tommy Hilfiger took the fashion crowd to Avery Fischer Hall at Lincoln Center. It was the first fashion show held there in 40 years.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America celebrated its own at its annual Fashion Awards in June at the New York Public Library.

Top winners included, Francisco Costa, Creative Director for the women's Calvin Klein Collection. He took home the award for Womenswear Designer of the Year.

Tom Ford was awarded Menswear Designer of the Year.

Tory Burch won Accessory Designer of the Year and Carolina Herrera was presented with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award.

Even Mayor Michael Bloomberg received an award. The Board of Director's Special Tribute for his dedication to the fashion industry.

Last month, the CFDA and VOGUE announced the winner of its fifth annual Fashion Fund competition, Alexander Wang. The emerging designer received $200,000 to help grow his business.

This year, fashion superstar Marc Jacobs continued to make headlines over hemlines as the design house agreed to pay a million dollars to settle allegations of bribing a state official for a coveted space for his fashion shows.

Menswear designer John Varvatos opened up a new boutique in April at the old Bowery home of CBGB's, where he's been hosting monthly concerts performed by both established and up and coming artists.

And finally, from music to movies, fashion played a big role in one of the year's biggest films -- "Sex and the City."

That's a wrap for fashion in 2008, but New York Fashion Week isn't too far away, the spring 2009 shows kick off February 13.
