It was déjà vu all over again for the jets at the start of 2011. They were back in the AFC Championship game for the second year in a row, but a slow start against the Steelers was too much to overcome and gang green finished just short of making the Super Bowl once again.

The Knicks changed their fortunes when they acquired Carmelo Anthony at the trade deadline in February, making the playoffs for the first time in seven seasons. They would get swept in the first round by the Celtics. The Knicks were looking forward to building on their 2011 turnaround, but the NBA lockout kept everyone off the court. But once the labor fight was settled, the Knicks did acquire center Tyson Chandler, giving New York its own version of the Big Three.

The Rangers also got back into the playoffs in 2011 but fell to the Capitals in the first round, but like the Knicks, the blueshirts also improved themselves for another playoff run by signing Brad Richards and started the season as one of the better teams in the league

St. John's returned the NCAA tournament for the first time in nine years, winning 21 games under first year head coach Steve Lavin. But with most of the team graduating and coach Lavin taking time off to recover from prostate cancer surgery, the Red Storm have gotten off to a slow start as they enter 2012.

The college world was rocked by sexual molestation allegations from the campuses of Penn State and Syracuse University.

Big milestones were front and center during the Yankees season. Derek Jeter became the first Yankee to collect 3,000 hits, and he did it in style, knocking one out of the park for the big moment. Mariano Rivera cemented his place in history as the greatest closer ever when his 602nd save put him at the top of the all-time saves list. But the Yanks came up short of their ultimate goal, falling in the first round of the playoffs to the Tigers.

The Mets season was crippled by injuries and a financial scandal that had fans wondering how competitive the team could be. Jose Reyes was the only bright spot, putting up MVP numbers and becoming the first Met to win a batting title, but he said goodbye to the Mets after the season, signing with the Miami Marlins.

Like the NBA, the NFL settled a lockout, and the Giants surprised everyone by winning six of their first seven games. The Jets struggled, and each game sent doubts if they could get back to the playoffs. But when the two met on Christmas Eve, the Giants took control of the city and their playoff destiny while the Jets would need lots of help to get back in the postseason as the calendar turns to 2012.
