1664...Peter Stuyvesant surrenders New Amsterdam to the British, who rename the town "New York" in honor of the duke who sent them.

1910...The original Penn Station opens. The majestic structure is modeled after baths in ancient Rome, but is demolished in 1963 to make way for a new Madison Square Garden.

1992...NY1 News, the Big Apple's first 24-hour local news station, makes its debut from its studio on West 42nd Street. Ten years later the newschannel moves to it current location in Chelsea.
