1664...Peter Stuyvesant surrenders New Amsterdam to the British, who rename the town "New York" in honor of the duke who sent them.

1910...The original Penn Station opens. The majestic structure is modeled after baths in ancient Rome, but is demolished in 1963 to make way for a new Madison Square Garden.
