1926...Silent screen star Rudolph Valentino dies suddenly at age 31. The next day, thousands of distraught fans crowd Campbell's Funeral Home at Broadway and 66th Street.

1989...Teenager Yusef Hawkins is shot to death by a gang of whites in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. The murder sets off days of racial tensions.

2011...The city's 911 lines are swamped with thousands more calls than usual as an earthquake -- whose epicenter was in Virigina -- is felt in the Big Apple. Some people decide to evacuate their buildings, but luckily there are no reports of major injuries or damage.
