1975...A little-known performer named Bruce Springsteen begins a five-night stand at The Bottom Line in Greenwich Village. Within two months, he is on the covers of Time and Newsweek magazines.

1992...Filmmaker Woody Allen sues Mia Farrow for custody of their three children. He loses the case the following year.

1995...Former Yankee star Mickey Mantle dies in a Dallas hospital of cancer while recuperating from a liver transplant at the age of 64. For a generation of New Yorkers, "The Mick" was the epitome of the all-American slugger – but he eventually became an alcoholic, and near the end of the life he urged his fans not to follow his lifestyle.
