1885...On a dare, swimming instructor Robert Odlum leaps into the East River from the Brooklyn Bridge. He is believed to be the bridge's first jumper – but he doesn't live to tell the tale.

1994...Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis dies at her home on Fifth Avenue at age 65. The former Jacqueline Bouvier grew up in Manhattan society, then returned a young widow in 1964 following the assassination of JFK. She was instrumental in promoting the city's cultural institutions and helping to preserve landmark buildings.
