1624...The first immigrants arrive in New York harbor. Thirty families from Holland settle on Nutten Island, now known as Governor's Island.

1957...Yankee outfielder Hank Bauer knocks out a fan during a wild birthday party for Billy Martin at the Copacabana.

1977...Five people are killed when a helicopter topples over on the rooftop helipad atop the old Pan Am building on Park Avenue. Helicopter service from the building ends shortly thereafter.
