1912...The luxury liner Titanic, en route to New York City from England on her maiden voyage, strikes an iceberg and sinks in one of history's worst maritime disasters. Over 1,500 perish, including New York industrialist Benjamin Guggenheim and R.H. Macy's owner Isidor Straus.

1992..."The Queen of Mean," Leona Helmsley, begins serving a four-year sentence for tax evasion. She's released a year later.
