1947...Mayor William O'Dwyer submits a record $1 billion budget for the city, surpassing all but the federal budget.

1998...Former Manhattan Congresswoman Bella Abzug dies from complications following heart surgery. Abzug, an outspoken leader of the feminist movement, was the first Jewish woman elected to Congress, where she served from 1971-1977.
