1848...Real estate magnate John Jacob Astor, America's richest man, dies at age 84.

1951...New Yorkers Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are convicted of atomic espionage at a federal court in New York. They are executed two years later.

1959..."Some Like It Hot," the classic comedy starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemon and Marilyn Monroe, premieres in New York.

1962...Jack Parr hosts "The Tonight Show" for the last time. Johnny Carson takes over that fall, and ten years later the show moves from New York City to Burbank, California.
