In 1974...Former New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller is sworn in as Vice President of the United States.

In 2000...Former Mayor John Lindsay, who led the city through the turbulent 1960s, dies at the age of 79. Lindsay was a Congressman from the Upper East Side when he was elected mayor in 1965, and went on to serve two terms. He began his career as a Republican, but crossed over to the Democratic Party and in 1972 launched an unsuccessful bid for the presidency.
