2013... Four people are killed and dozens injured when a Metro-North train derails in The Bronx. Investigators later determine that the engineer fell asleep at the controls. This and other serious Metro-North accidents lead investigators to recommend reforms to improve safety on the line.

1955...Commuting becomes a little easier for straphangers in Queens when a tunnel opens linking the IND and BMT lines just west of the Queens Plaza Station. Known as the 60th Street Tunnel Connection, it is used today by the R train.
