1789...The first U.S. Congress, meeting in New York, adopts twelve amendments to the Constitution. Ten of them go on to become the Bill of Rights.

1979...The smash musical "Evita" opens on Broadway.

1996...The New York Yankees defeat the Milwaukee Brewers to the clinch the American League East – the Bronx Bombers' first division title since 1981. The team goes on to win four World Series championships over the next five years.
