The Call Blog: Congressman Grimm Indicted, Says He Won’t Abandon Post

  • Text size: + -

Have something to tell us at The Call? Drop us a line at thecall@ny1.com and we'll post it to our blog.

Unless there is a mug shot with blood-red eyes, you stay in office. Unless there is a picture of your previously-Tweeted private parts, you stay in office. Until there is visual evidence of your wrongdoing, no politician in America will resign before a trial even begins. Not one. Guilty or not.

Early this morning, Staten Island Congressman Michael Grimm turned himself in at FBI headquarters in downtown Manhattan. After a two-year investigation into his campaign finances, Grimm was charged with a 20-count indictment rooted in a tax evasion scheme that allegedly concealed more than $1 million dollars from the government. Grimm faces up to 20 years behind bars if convicted on all the charges.

Congressman Grimm is under fire from federal investigators, who boast it’s an open-and-shut case. In a news conference today, US Attorney Loretta Lynch said Grimm "never met a tax he didn't lie to evade." She claimed he paid workers off the books while taking money right out of the cash register of his small business. And an assistant FBI Director said, "He cheated, evaded and then lied."

But the Congressman is not vowing to fight the charges. After posting bail, Grimm said, "I know I'm a moral man, a man of integrity, and I also know that I have a lot more service and leadership to provide this country. Grimm said he "will not abandon my post or the wonderful people who entrusted me to represent them."

Do you think Congressman Grimm should resign? Should he fight the charges and continue to run for re-election this fall? Do you agree with Grimm’s lawyer that the investigation and charges are "a politically driven vendetta?"

SI elects crooks. In 1980, Congressman John Murphy was indicted, but not yet convicted, in Nov.

Michael Grimm is a congressman. He should not be supported if he is guilty. He was evading Paying taxes which is a crime and paying illegals off the book which is one reason New Yorkers can't get jobs. A caller said he was out there comforting people during hurricane Sandy. What help and funding did he get for the victims. Furthermore he seems to be a thug. Look at how he threatened Michael Scotto when he thought the camera was off. Who knows what else he's doing.

Some of the calls that are coming in scare me a bit with people saying things like, "Lock him up!", or "He should resign!" Do they realize what they are saying about the 5th amendment? What does "Innocent until proven guilty" mean? I hope these calling are listening to their own words because to me this sound like what the people were saying in the "Witch Hunts" of the sixteen hundred.

He is a criminal, any way you look at it. To blatantly break the law and mislead his constituents speaks volumes of Grimm's character. Unfortunately, these same unsavvy and clueless constituents will let him slide and vote him in again.

Grimm acts like a thug. He has a history of negative patterns. He threatens reporters, has skirmishes in bars. Is this the way a congressman should act? As a former law enforcement official, he should know better than to play games with taxes. If there's one thing the government can always get you on it's tax fraud. His district will do better with a more stand up individual. Karma has come full circle to Grimm.

A man is innocent until proven guilty. Michael Grimm cannot resign because to do so would be an admission of guilt. Whatever Michael Grimm has done, right or wrong, as a politician he will have to ride this out because with regard to politicians, politics can be a slimy business no matter which way you slice it.

SO HE PAID PEOPLE OFF THE BOOKS YEARS AGO??? REALLY?? NOTHING BETTER TO DO WITH TAXPAYER MONEY? WHAT A JOKE!!! THIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN A WITCH HUNT!! HOW CAN THEY GO AFTER GRIMM BUT NOT RANGEL WHO MADE THE TAX LAWS AND CHEATED ON HIS OWN TAX RETURNS?OR OUR CURRENT CITY COUNCIL LEADER WHO DOESN'T CLAIM INCOME ON RENTAL PROPERTY? THIS IS A DISGRACE THAT THESE 2 THIEVES ARE IN OFFICE, THEY SHOULD BOTH BE IN JAIL! AND I WILL VOTE FOR HIM IN NOVEMBER!

JOHN, PRINCE'S BAY, STATEN ISLAND.

I think Congressman Grimm should resign be caused his legal issues is not going to help our city so he should deal with his issues before becoming congress.

Hi John this is Erik from bushwick..

we've already seen this type of politics using strong arming people to get their way as NY1 reporter Michael Scotto experienced. the FBI doesn't call you out for NO reason. From Christie to Grimm these bullies need to get out politics and be taught a lesson and made an example of.

btw Angela from Bayridge had the most idiotic comment

thanks John love your show! thanks for giving NY a platform to voice out on these issues :).

Congressman Grimm is a man who appears to have more than one face, and his tough guy demeanor has overshadowed his political abilities. Nobody wants a cheap hood in a fitted suit, pretending to be a man of integrity. By not admitting his guilt, he may be backing himself in a corner.

I am from the South shore of Staten Island . I think Michael Grimm is perfect for Staten Island . He is a tough , upfront tell it like it is kind of guy. He has the Guts to take on anything for Staten Island . These " people " are intimidated by him. How about looking into Mayor Diblasio friends , bet you would find lots of skeletons their . I would def. vote for him !!! So would many many people I have spoke with !

Hi John,

They are always politically motivated and coincidently arrested today when the House returns after a 2 week break. We all know he is guilty but will not resign, is a loose cannon and bullied Michael Scott in a cowardous way but will not resign until he is found guilty.

Michael Grimm worked tirelessly for his constituents after Sandy. He and his staff trudged through mud and water helping people retrieve their belongings. These charges are ridulous. I don't know anything about the evidence but what business owner doesn't hire illegals and pay them cash? Are the tax and spend liberal Democrats so threatened by him? I guess misconduct is only OK for Democrats. The Congressman has my full support and the support of most of his constituents

The investigations into Congressman Grimm's financial records are a prime example of Democrats attempting to unseat a competitive Republican from office.

Hi John,

Of course Grimm is not the only politician that has gotten himself in trouble. What nerve to get In front of a podium with their pompous attitudes towards us tax paying citizens acting as though they were just anointed as two saints. I don’t condone what Grimm has done but I would ride it out just as all the other politicians have done before him and are still doing at the present time. It’s a hack job for sure. Imagine the skeletons in the closets of these two senators that have yet to be discovered. [BY THE WAY SCHUMER AND MENENDEZ = WHERE’S ALL THE SANDY MONEY??? ]

Thank you John,

If he is guilty he should resign and save us the drama. His paying of undocumented workers puts his stance on illegal immigration into perspective. He exploited them and approves of their illegal entry into the country. Try him like any other person and let the chips fall where they may.

John,

Grimm should fight.

WHEN A CASE LIKE THIS ARISES, I FEEL HIS PROPERTY SHOULD BE SEIZED AND HIS SALARY AND PENSION SHOULD BE RETURNED TO THE COFFERS OF AMERICANS. TO BETRAY THE PUBLIC TRUST AND TO THREATEN A REPORTER IS GANGSTER LIKE ACTIONS. BE GONE!

JOE, BAY TERRACE

Hi John,

Congressman Grimm should look at his own video of his confrontational behavior with Mr. Michael Scotto. He got one thing right. He is going to "fight" alright. He needs to look at his video and see if what he called Mr. Scotto "little boy" was the voice of integrity speaking?. I think not!

Grimm needs to resign and let Staten Island get rid of the trash who lied his way into office. He fooled the voters with his lies too.
