The Call Blog: Mayor De Blasio Delivers State Of The City Address

  • Text size: + -

Have something to tell us at The Call? Drop us a line at thecall@ny1.com and we'll post it to our blog.

Mayor de Blasio's State of the City sounded a lot like a summary of his campaign speeches. But now, he has the power to get some of his vision accomplished. That's a good thing, if you like him. A scary thing, if you don't.

In his first State of the City address, Mayor de Blasio vowed to address the "inequality gap that fundamentally threatens our future." Speaking at LaGuardia Community College in Queens, the new mayor said "affordable housing is an oxymoron" for countless New Yorkers, and the "middle class isn’t just squeezed, it’s at risk of disappearing altogether."

During the address, Mayor de Blasio outlined several ideas for his first year in office. He plans to ask State lawmakers for the power to raise the minimum wage, and to raise taxes on the wealthy to fund universal pre-Kindergarten. In addition, de Blasio said municipal identification cards will be available to all residents this year, regardless of their immigration status.

Do you agree with Mayor de Blasio's comments on the struggles of low-income and middle-class New Yorkers? Should New York City have control over raising the minimum wage? If so, what should it be? Do you support municipal ID cards so undocumented immigrants have access to bank accounts, library cards, and other services?

Affordable housing is a double edged sword. It is not only TEMPORARY solution, but a discriminatory one has well! I know this to be a fact as I currently reside in an affordable housing unit. My lease is affordable for 20 years, after which we will have to leave. I have 13 yrs left, once that is up where do we go?? These buildings that participate save millions and millions in tax breaks for allocating affordable units in their building, so this is not a one way street. Not only are we given an expiration date on our home, but we are not permitted to attend school full time! So, we are kicked out in 13yrs, but our right to an equal education is taken away from us. How do we move forward? How do we survive when a right such as going to school full time is forbidden? We have an expiration is placed on our home! Changes need to be made, EQUAL RIGHTS implemented and a permanent solution is needed.

I think there needs to be a conversation about which income bracket is which class. Some people have been saying that earning $500k+ is middle class, that doesn't sound right.

Taxes are not paid based upon what services you use. Taxes are paid based on how much you earn. Taxes are what we pay to live in a civilized society. Paying tax for pre-K is a win for you even if you don't have children because you are creating a more educated and successful society, the perks of which you will enjoy.

I've heard the term Greatest City in the World thrown around a lot, there's been two broken escalators at the 42nd St 7 train station for over a week now causing major congestion during PM rush hour. The greatest city in the world cant get an escalator fixed? I think that says it all about the rest of the city's problems.

I have lived in Murray Hill for over 12 years- but life here is becoming more and more unaffordable- even for people that havent stopped trying to work and for those that keep trying to have a better life. It is REALLY tough for us "regular" folk.

I doubt illegals would want or need to open a bank account as many send money back to their native countries to support their families living there. Does the mayor think banks would want to open accounts for a customer who would not be able to maintain a minimum balance? Or will the mayor force banks to do business with illegals who cannot produce any paperwork? I don't think so.

To piggy bank off of Allan's email, our new mayor truly does need to address the out of control violence in New York City's Correction Department, by appointing a Qualified Commissioner, and immediately implement policies that will regain the control the department has long lost, before something horrific is allowed to take shape, and occur, due to the last commissioners' administration's lack to troublkeshoot, and lead.

Raising the minimum wage? Wouldn't that just motivate folks to stay in the same dead end job instead of aspiring to become millionaires? De Blasio is just feeding opium to the masses - this is the greatest city in the world for a reason. We all have the same opportunities - some of us choose to sit around and let the state take care of us while others are motivated to succeed. Stop blaming others.

The mayor was sent by God to do this very important work. Work that the previous administration ignored and brushed under the carpet. It is a wonderful feeling to know that we have a true humanitarian as mayor!! I love the" ID" idea. What a mess it is for a person who has none. You can do nothing without ID yet it has been impossible to get it! I believe in him and so should every New Yorker!

When we speak about affordable housing which economic bracket are we addressing? It seems that many of the units being constructed are for lower income people. If you make between 65, 000- 80,000 dollars you do not qualify for affordable housing, so what is really affordable?

Candace

I agree for the mayors call for living wages, pre-K, but he fails to appoint a permanent department of correction Commissioner, fails to mention radical changes in solitary confinement, and crisis intervention teams to respond to 911 calls involving the mentally ill. If he wants equality in income , give municipal workers a significant wage increase to level the playing field.

I am middle class person but i dont believe you should Tax people because they make over 500 thousands You are taxing people unfairly

What's the point? Nothing is affordable. Why is crime rising so steadly? People wanna eat!

Hi John;

In conclusion Mayor DeBlasio has no clue what he is doing. HOW is he going to get higher paying jobs in NYC? Why did he give the fashion industry 3 million dollars? I agree about giving illegal aliens identity cards...this way they can start paying taxes and in the event of an arrest, they will have proper id in their possession.

DeBlasio is going to do nothing for the working middle class. If he talks about a tale of two cities any longer, I'm going to get sick.

I'm a fan of Deblasio's proposed policies, but what if Albany says no? His universal pre-k and middle school after school programs are out the door (unless Cuomo implements them). Minimum wage hike is out the door. Then what?

Robert

I thought what I heard of the speech was okay, but am becoming a bit concerned about the middle class. Am beginning to fear what he does for middle class may be limited to apologizing for not plowing enough and not filling potholes fast enough and then spending ever more money on plowing and pothole filling for people who are cluttering our streets with their cars and running over pedestrians.

Ellie - Turtle Bay

The middle class is struggling because many of them are City workers who have not had a pay increase in over five years while inflation has skyrocketed prices of every kind. Give City workers a fair increase to compensate for lack of wage increases and the middle class will be able to afford their housing. No mention of any Municipal Labor Unions without contracts for the past 5 yrs either. That should be his priority.

WITH THESE ID’S IT WOULD BE LIKE GIVEN THEM THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM = ONCE AGAIN THEY ARE KILLING US ONE BY ONE = ALL OF THOSE THAT WERE SO PROUD TO BE AMERICANS FIGHTING FOR THIS COUNTRY AND IT’S LIKE IT WAS ALL FOR NAUGHT.

I suspect that deep down Mr. De Blasio wants not so much to be Mayor of New York as President of the People's Republic of New York -- fortunately, reality, in the form of Albany and the state courts will cut him off at the knees on a goodly chunk of his agenda, if not out of an actual abhorrence of his ideology then over their sheer unwillingness to share power with him over most of these issues.

John,

Let De Blasio pay for all his loony ideas out of his own pocket. I don't work for the benefit of other people.
