The Call Blog: Washington Nears Deal To Reopen Government, Avoid Debt Crisis

  • Text size: + -

Have something to tell us at The Call? Drop us a line at thecall@ny1.com and we'll post it to our blog.

The deal -- although much welcome -- is once again just a band-aid. I, along with I'm sure most Americans, do not look forward to doing this all over again in February. Hopefully, the two sides can work together without the pressure of a such a close deadline.

Finally! After weeks of bickering and failed negotiations, a bipartisan budget deal is expected to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate and the Republican-led House tonight before a midnight deadline. The deal would keep the government open through January 15, 2014 and lift the debt ceiling until February 7, 2014.

President Obama is expected to sign the measure, which also directs Congressional leaders to name negotiators to craft a larger budget deal by the end of the year. Today's agreement does not defund the Affordable Care Act, but does preserve the budget cuts enacted through sequestration. Republican House Speaker John Boehner said earlier, "We fought the good fight, we just didn't win." What do you say?

What's your reaction to the apparent deal in Washington to reopen the government and allow the United States to continue to pay its bills? Is the compromise fair? Are you surprised it took 16 days for an agreement to be reached? Who are the winners and losers in Washington today?

Send your thoughts using the link above.

THE LOSERS ARE THE REPUBLICANS. YOU HURT THE PEOPLE WHO VOTED FOR YOU. REPUBLICANS PUT THE ENTIRE US IN JEOPARDY ALL BECAUSE SPEAKER BOEHNER WANTS TO KEEP HIS POSITION OF POWER AND PLEASE HIS TEA PARTY CONSTITUENTS. THAT IS NOT LEADERSHIP THAT IS DICTATORSHIP

This act is getting very old already ! To me this is not a bipartisan deal.
What happens is this Obama Care started off on the wrong foot and everyone
should remember the arrogance of Reid and Pelosi from the very beginning in
that no one knew what was in this Obama Care. Reid and Pelosi just insisted
that it get passed and when many were complaining and asking to many
questions Pelosi said read it after we pass it. Until this day the only person
that has absorbed it cover to cover is Betsy McCall and I commend her for
her hard work in taking on such a humongous project.
[A PIECE OF WORK IS MORE LIKE IT]
They need to stop all of these old cronies from getting involved in all the
decisions of this country that we have to live by. They get to many privileges
and we are treated as though we were all second class citizens. We pay your
salaries and don’t forget it.
What is the point of raising the debt when they all keep on spending to oblivion
with our money. [BIG SPORTS FOR SURE = THAT ALSO APPLIES TO THE LOCAL
AND STATE GOVERNMENTS]
No I’m not surprised that it took this long because they all were well aware of
what the outcome would be.
They the REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS have become one and just where
does that leave us.
We the people that have lost our jobs and homes and are surviving hand to
mouth and no one cares in Washington for any of us. Just what happened to
all of the promises from these hot shots saying they will get jobs and better
housing and all it amounts to is a lot of BULL in my estimation. I though all
of these appointed jobs to the government workers were high paying jobs
and you mean they were complaining that they lost two weeks pay. What
must the rest of us say that have been hit so hard in every way and we are
living this if we can call it living since 2008.
Make no mistake about it the President has the jet engines already riveting
up and ready to go and Michele ready to go out and continue her campaigning.

IN A FEW WORDS WE THE AMERICAN TAX PAYING CITIZENS HAVE BEEN
ONCE AGAIN MADE DAMN FOOLS OF.

A DISGRACE !!!!!!!!!

After 2 weeks of political gridlock, there is finally an agreement to reopen the government and to raise the debt ceiling to prevent the nation from defaulting on its financial responsibilities. These past 2 weeks really have proven that our political system is severely broken and divided. While it is good that both sides were able to come to an agreement, keep in mind that we may very well have to start this whole convoluted process again in early 2014-a very comforting but realistic and unnerving fact. The cast of clowns, idiots , miscreants and buffoons in Washington may have even more surprises for us come January and February 2014. Stay tuned, folks!

This is not a deal, it's a disaster. 00% of these hooples should be fired and a new election held.

Cut the budget, cut it to the bone. Cut taxes, cut them to the bone.

Joe

The Republicans and Democrats should work together President Obama is willing to cross party lines to get a budget done the Republicans shouldn't be mad about Obamacare everyone have health insurance

Never before have I seen such a group of buffoons attempting to run our government. Hopefully, we get a large group of more reasonable, educated, roll your sleeves up and work towards helping all of the American people, instead of the group of greedy, selfish, people who now hold position of power in America. How can a country as wealthy as America allow its people to be destitute and have no health care. It's shameful.

Audrey

Finally the pusillanimous prevaricating right of wrong Republicans have stopped blackmailing innocent and needy Americans. Lacking reason, even minimal compassion for this country which is made the laughing stock of the rest of the world. If senators and house members didn't have such fabulous health care for themselves, they'd have some understanding for the rest of us. Facts and reason are totally irrelevant to these extremists. Shame on them!

Nancy

The end of the government shutdown has led to one prevailing thought for me: I'm never voting for anyone with an "R" next to their name again, whether they are running for President or dog catcher.

I wouldent trust these Ringling Brother 's applicant's (republicans) to sell sun glasses in the middle of the Sahara De sert, they are truly strange and differen t

Frank

The people of America unfortunately were the losers and that is shameful. The Republicans didn't get their way this time but I'm sure that they will think of something else later. There should be a FINE for holding the country 'hostage', should this despicable behavior repeat itself.

No I am not surprised that it took Republicans 16 days, this is exactly the same thing they did in 2011. They waited until the last hour, that's what they do.

There are no Winners and Losers in this mess. Some people have lost businesses because they couldn't get any assistance from the government. Furlough workers didn't get paychecks and couldn't pay their bills. Seniors weren't able to get their meals on wheels. Our state lost billions in revenue. This hit California extremely hard. Let us not forget that European countries think we are arrogant idiots. They have no faith in our government. They are calling to de-Americanize the currency.

This was unnecessary, ignorant and arrogance at it's best in politics spear headed by the Right Winged Side of the Republican Party. This has tainted all the Republican party.

When January comes around the Republicans will take us right back down this road.

Theresa
Upper West Side

The Right wing Republicans were the ones who shut down the government and they will also come out the losers. Chris Van Hollen getting the word out on H Res 368 really dealt a blow. It's incredible how the House can take rules made to protect democracy and the people and turn it on its head.

Mike

The winners of this government shutdown are those who will profit by it, the losers are us, the people of our nation, the government workers, and those who were productively and financially incapacitated. Our credibility in general, is skating a
thin pond around the world.

What Cruz and his minions have done to the country is obscene. They want to cut money out of social programs, but not a penny from the bloated defense budget, which is by far the largest portion of the US budget.

But what's really scary is that China, our country's biggest owner of Treasury bills, is already saying they no longer want the global financial system based on the US financial system. Just wait till China starts selling off T-bills. It will make the Great Depression look like a boom time.

Gretchen

If the 2 week shutdown caused the price of gasoline to come down by .40 cents I say we keep it shut for another two weeks!

At this point it should not matter who won or who lost, but that the government finally agreed to end this impasse. Of course it is not the end, since we have January and February to once again see this impasse, unless something gets settled before they go on Christmas vacation. Please make sure that they don't get paid when we face this again. Had they not gotten paid, it would not have taken 16 days.

I do hope that those who vote pay attention to how long you keep these people in office. A law needs to be passed to appoint congress representatives and senators for two terms and no more. If President Washington felt that two terms were enough for the presidency, I don't know why that should not hold true for all government officials. Look what happened with having a mayor have three terms, the education part and increase in real estate taxes has not been the best.

Why did we need a Tea Party? The woman did not know anything about the United States government, and now she and Cruz are influencing the government. How are these people considered government of the people?

We really need a cleaning of the whole Congress and really think of having those who are there of, by and for the people. I can assure you it is not a government in the interest of the people.

Stella

THE DEMOCRATS WON. THIS MEANS THE MIDDLE CLASS WON. THE REPUBLICANS LOST. THIS MEAN THE SHARE HOLDERS OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY LOST.

Should be illegal to shut down ANY type of government, couldn't they oppose Obamacare any other way?? geez.

Carmen

The politicians in Washington, Democrats and Republicans
should be ashamed of themselves.

They are a bunch of bums, clowns,
that need to be voted out. In addition,
Obama is the worst President in US history.

This country needs a revolution, a March on Washington
like they did in 1963.

Our forefathers are probably turning over in their graves
the way the Constitution has been disrespected.

Anthony

Ask anyone in the street if they like Obama care and they will say no. Ask the same person f they like the affordable care act they will say yes!!what's that all about! Goes to show people don't read or think for themselves. With Obama care the rich will need to pay a bit more taxes...oh boy, they may need to get food stamps lol! The republicans should stop playing solitare and go to work on making the law work. We need to provide basic care to all..it's unethical not to. The rich just don't get it.
