The Call Blog: Government Shutdown Enters Second Week

  • Text size: + -

Have something to tell us at The Call? Drop us a line at thecall@ny1.com and we'll post it to our blog.

Our political system is broken. Mr. Smith, don't go to Washington. Honest politicians don't stand a chance.

Two polls released today find Americans are growing increasingly frustrated with the partial federal government shutdown, and many point the blame at Republicans. According to a Washington Post/ABC News poll, 70 percent of Americans disapprove of the way Republicans are handling negotiations over the federal budget, while 24 percent approve. In addition, a Pew poll found 38 percent said Republicans were to blame for the shutdown, 30 percent blame the Obama administration, and 19 percent blame both.

Republicans in the House have resisted reaching a budget deal unless Democrats delay or defund President Obama's health care law. Both sides accuse the other of failing to reach across the aisle to negotiate. 800,000 federal employees are out of work and many services remain closed around the country. The stalemate is taking its toll on investors, as the stock market closed today at its lowest level in a month.

How is the partial government shutdown affecting you? What message does Washington's inaction send to the rest of the world? Do you blame the stalemate on Democrats, Republicans, or both political parties?

Send your thoughts using the link above.

If you see a someone drowning a cat; do you walk up to them and say "Both of you, stop it!" Help me understand how the 19 per centers think.

Brooklyn

JOHN,

PLEASE MAKE AVAILABLE THOSE IN CONGRESS WHO ENJOY FARM SUBSIDIES. LIST THE AMOUNTS AND DO TELL IF THE SUBSIDIES ARE SUSPENDED. GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN EQUALS GOVERNMENT IN HIDING. DISGUSTING.

JOE, BAY TERRACE

It's partly the fault of Mr. Obama, for having allowed himself to appear so weak in past confrontations with the House up to this point that the more radical members of that body believed that there was something to be gained by forcing this situation.

But mostly this is the fault of the House Republicans and Senator Cruz, for refusing to acknowledge the reality, that the Affordable Care Act is law, period.

And Mr. Obama and Mr. Reid are 100% correct in refusing to negotiate with what amount to legislative hostage-takers -- to do anything else would set a horrendous precedent that would undermine our government even more than it has been.

John,

Obamacare was the Democrat's idea. They are totally responsible for any damage done to the economy. If you want to stop the suffering, if there indeed is any, then repeal Obamacare and get Obama out of office.

John,

Why don't these idiot Republicans (and this is my most acceptable word for them) realize that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been passed, the Supreme Court deemed it law and the Republicans tried (and failed) to delay or stop it over 40 times? Enough already! And honestly, I don't think it's the Republicans as much as it is the Tea Party (you know, those people who think there's too much government but God forbid you take away their paychecks and their special interests!).

The shutdown hasn't affected me so far, but it might somewhere down the line. EVERYONE in the government needs to listen to the 70% of Americans who disapprove of the Republicans (and all politicians for that matter) for being such babies!

Time to get over it!

Hi John,

The Blame Game One More Time!!!!!!! Where are the polls being taken? Just curious. Why are the same politicians always running the show? As far as government workers go=It seems as though they all got shook up when they thought they were not getting paid. Only to find out that they will get it eventually. Why Schumer [Mr. know it all] didn’t inform the people that in New York State they have gone through this before. My other concern with these government workers getting all shook up about their money not one politician ever mentioned all the people that have lost their jobs and have been out of work for how many years now? HOW ABOUT THIS: Immigration push=Mereck slashing 16.000 jobs Wants more Foreign workers= Lou Dobbs [report] DID ANYONE HEAR ANY POLITICIAN MENTION THIS REPORT? I THINK NOT=!!!! I guess it’s not to important!!!

Thank You John,
maxxiee

THIS WHOLE FIASCO WAS IN THE WORKS DURING THE GEORGE W. BUSH ADMINISTRATIONS. THESE LITTLE DIVERSION TACTICS, AND THAT IS JUST WHAT THEY ARE, WILL GIVE US SOME IDEA HOW FAR THEIR LIMITED INSIGHT WILL BE COMING FROM THE GOP/REPUBLICAN PARTIES. WHENEVER YOU HEAR 'BUSH ERA' ANYTHING, TRUST ME THIS IS A WELL PLANNED ATTACK ON THE COUNTRY AND OUR FUTURE LEADERS AS TO KNOW HOW TO INACT A PLOY, DIDICATED TO DISRUPTION BY ISSUE, AND ARE TIME RELEASED DURING THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION(s).

The blame falls on Speaker Boehner and the House Republicans. We all know that the President can't do anything regarding "spending" without the approval of the House of Representatives. Boehner is deceiving the public because he knows he has the vote to pass a "clean bill", but he is grandstanding for the Tea Party in order to keep his position as Speaker. It's Boehner who is refusing to allow the house to vote. If he doesn't have the "votes" as he claims, why don't he simply let the house vote and we will see. They are simply "dishonest".

Any chance this Rogue Renegade Republican Party and its Tea Party Flying Monkeys Henchmen will end this hostage crisis and re-open the government any time soon??? When the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, it passed through both Senate and Congress. Nobody attached it to a budget, or any other legislature to get it approved. The country wasn’t held hostage to get the ACA passed. So if all the proper protocols were followed to get the ACA passed as law, why shouldn’t Republicans have to follow the proper protocols to get the ACA repealed? Why is the Republican Party resorting to tactics that are equivalent to high-jacking or hostage taking? These are not the actions of a rational and logical political party, but instead the actions of an angry mob. I’m not sure who cooked up this scheme and what they were thinking – but this is below the belt. And all who hopped on the “take America hostage” bandwagon are just as guilty. Stop politicking and just pull the plug on this nonsense!!!

I think what is going on is absolutely horrendous. And I don’t think Obama is bridging the gulf that divides us. While I am a registered dem, I hate how the liberal media is putting their spin on this and singling out just the republicans. The government is made up of BOTH parties. Why not just be fair about it John? The question you asked early is stacking the deck.

I am a Software Professional and working on H1b visa. I need to apply for extension for my work permit and this govt shutdown is affecting myself and many of my friends in terms of immigration statuses.

Thanks

I blame the Republicans -- actually right-wing tea party Republicans for this entire government shutdown. This all started with Obamacare even though it was voted into law and found constitutional they are still vehemently trying to tear it down. This is The Obamacare Fiasco being performed in the Republican controlled House. One GOP representative even linked Obamacare to "The Fugitive Slave Act" despite millions of Americans logging on to the Healthcare Exchange last week seeking healthcare insurance. How mind-boggling. But Republican Mayoral Candidate Joe Lhota also feels that Obamacare should be halted even though it is law but will not refer himself as being linked with tea party republicans. Really -- but the Koch Brothers who financially back tea party republicans are also backing Joe Lhota for Mayor even as he adamantly and forcibly denies it. But a politician wouldn't lie -- would they?

Ted Cruz and his creepy friends are plain Racists. They would rather bury the country than let a black president succeed. These guys are a direct result of the supreme court decision to let billionaires fund these clowns.

I am watching your show from my NYC hotel room. I am from Atlanta and we in the south have no interest in being held hostage by this president an the large democrat voting blocks in the NE and California. Why should we eat this rotten pie being served to us all?

Ben

This is about the President and the fact he is the people's choice. They are all wealthy and have lost sight of how they got there. Use your vote and get rid of them all. Just don't put any Tea Party in office!

Barbara, Queens NY.

It’s time for disunion. Which appears to be what many want. If the conservatives want to form a new country, LET THEM! Those that wanted some sort of “middle path” will have a choice; join the secessionists or stay with the Union.

David

It's time for a civil uprising in this country!

John, the Bronx

This is what happens when you try to govern a 21st Century democracy with an 18th Century political system. Representative government is obsolete. Citizens can use the Internet to vote on the individual issues in which they have an interest. If we can have an interactive TV show like The Call, we can have an interactive voting system that would cut out the politicians and put the power in the hands of the people.

Michael in Greenpoint

Republicans not asking for anything but fairness. Congress voted for Obomacare but obsolved themselves from it. They also asked for the public to get the same treatment as the businesses who got a years repreive. That is not defunding. Who wants still can get it.

It is a shameful situation when a whole country is being held hostage by these house republicans. They haven't voted on a budget in over 2 years, they haven't settled social security or healthcare. They are willing to put our country in default because of their lack of cooperation. The only thing they did vote on was their own benefits package. This government shutdown is hurting the American people by loss of wages, it is affecting the stockmarket and I believe they will let us default on our debt for their own purposes.

Monique

The Republicans can't repeal ObamaCare the normal way, so they shut down the govt. to force the Democrats to give them what they want. Now they will default the govt. if they don't get their way. This is legislative terrorism.

-Dan from Rego Park

The only reason the politicians did it this year is because there are no major elections. If this was a significant year for elections there would be no shutdown.

They are hoping Americans have short-term memories and forget it by 2016. Let us remember this and fire the people responsible.

G.T.

I don't understand how John Boehner even got re-elected! America needs to wake up and put an end to the bullying by these republicans next election!

Patricia

Dear Mr. John Schiumo:

Both Democrats and Republicans are to blame for this shutdown. The government shutdown could be ended tomorrow by furloughing the entire Congress and fining each one of them $100,000 per day for each day of the shutdown.

Sincerely,
Gary
