One Rockaways landlord can't afford to make repairs on one family's home and was denied assistance from FEMA. Now he has decided the only way out is to sell the house. NY1's Susan Jhun has the story.
Raymond Hawson and his disabled mother Lorraine have struggled to get by for more than a month without power or heat.
Lorraine said she's in daily pain and to make matters worse, she's confined to the home since she lost her wheelchair in the flood.
"My mother is disabled," Raymond said. "I worry about her everyday and we are beyond the point of stress."
Their situation got even tougher for the Rockaway Beach renters when their landlord said he can't afford to make repairs, which means electricity and heat won't be restored.
Instead, the Hawsons say their landlord intends to sell the house.
"That just left us completely, utterly stunned," Raymond said.
We contacted their landlord who confirmed he plans to sell the house, but says he has no choice because he just doesn't have the money to make repairs.
He claims FEMA denied him assistance because it's not his primary residence and that he didn't qualify for Rapid Repairs either.
The landlord went on to say he has reapplied to the Rapid Repairs program and is waiting to hear back. In the meantime, he says he's not charging the Hawsons rent and would make the repairs if he had the money.
"You know it's just not fair that he does this I'm very surprised," Lorraine said.
The Hawsons, who don't have renter's insurance, were both denied assistance from FEMA.
The mother and son renters have a year and a half left on their lease and say at this point they have no where else to go.
"Please any contractor who would donate their time, money or efforts we would greatly appreciate it," Raymond said.
We contacted the Center For Indepedance of the Disabled in New York and they're say they going to help Lorriane get a replacement wheelchair.
