Democratic Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy of New York plans to retire from the House, according to senior aides.

McCarthy was elected in 1996 after her husband was killed in the 1993 Long Island Rail Road Massacre.

McCarthy has served nine terms in the House, where she has been a frequent advocate for gun control.

In June, she announced she had been diagnosed with a treatable form of lung cancer.
