A soon to be released estimate by the Census Bureau is expected to show New York State's population continuing to drop.

The New York Times is reporting that demographers expect Florida, currently in fourth place, to be separated by only a few thousand people from third place New York.

Florida's numbers have been bolstered by recent immigration trends, as well as winter weary New Yorkers heading to the Sunshine State at a rate of more than 50,000 a year.

Besides bruising the Big Apple's ego, the dip could also have some longer lasting political ramifications.

A dip in the 2010 Census cost the state two Congressional seats.

Census data also impacts how federal money gets divided up among the states.
