Former House Speaker Tom Foley has died.
He passed away Friday at his home in Washington D.C., according to published reports.
He spent five years as Speaker in a career than spanned 30 years representing Washington state in the House of Representatives.
The Democrat was the first speaker since the Civil War who failed to win re-election in his home district.
Foley also served as U.S. ambassador to Japan for four years during the Clinton administration.
Tom Foley was 84 years old.
