U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano was on hand in the city Friday to welcome more than 150 new citizens.
The secretary presented them with the Oath of Allegiance.
The newly minted citizens hail from more than 40 different countries.
Napolitano told them that they join a long history of immigrants who have helped shape the country.
"These hundreds of thousands, indeed millions, of immigrants that have come to us over the years, each has their own story, their own individual story, and their own desires and wishes," Napolitano said. "And you represent that incredible variety that enriches our country."
The secretary also met privately with Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
On Thursday, she visited the September 11th Memorial and Museum and spoke with members of the New York City Police and Fire Departments.
