A new law is taking aim at motorists who do not obey the speed limit in school zones.
The measure, which was signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo Thursday, gives city officials the green light to install speed cameras in up to 20 school zones.
It is a five-year pilot program aimed at seeing if the cameras are an effective way of preventing accidents and protecting pedestrians.
Those caught going over 30 mph will be sent a $50 ticket.
The police commissioner says it is an appropriate use of technology in this day and age.
The law takes effect next month.
