A city lawmaker has proposed legislation to modernize the city's waterfront and boost its economic potential.

Rep. Nydia Velazquez said the purpose of the Waterfront of Tomorrow Act is to find ways to better protect coastal areas from devastating storms and make ports more environmentally sustainable.

She said accomplishing those goals would lead to a stronger economy.

"Investing in working ports is critical to our national economy," Velazquez said. "It is not a coincidence that last week, President Obama used major ports as a backdrop when unveiling his plan to reinvigorate our economy. Locally, the port industry is responsible for more than 260,000 regional jobs in a single year."

Congress is slated to take up legislation to improve the nation's waterways when it returns in September.

Velazquez said her bill would be part of that initiative.
