President Barack Obama unveiled his vision Wednesday for the economic future of America.

Addressing a crowd at Illinois' Knox College, the president says he wants to "rebuild ladders of opportunity" to lift the middle class and create a stronger economy.

He also says investing in our infrastructure and green technology jobs will create jobs for the millions still looking for work.

The president added every American should have access to a good education, affordable healthcare, and be able to retire without worrying how to make ends meet.

He also took shots at Republicans in both houses for slowing down the nation's fiscal recovery.

"With this endless parade of distractions, political posturing and phony scandals, Washington has taken its eye off the ball. And I am here to say this needs to stop. This moment does not require short-term thinking, it does not require having the same old stale debates. Our focus has to be on the basic economic issues that the matter most to you – the people we represent," Obama said.

The president first visited Knox College when he was a Senator in 2005.

He says he will go across the country to make his case to the people.
