State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli wants to make sure same-sex marriages performed in New York are recognized around the country, and he is using the state pension fund as leverage.

DiNapoli sent a letter to President Barack Obama, asking him to adopt new standards to have gay marriages performed in New York recognized in states where it is not legal.

The move is considered a push to get companies doing business with the state's $160 billion pension fund to adopt anti-discrimination measures.

DiNapoli has said companies could jeopardize the pension fund's investments with them by discriminating, harming their ability to recruit and retain top employees.

The right of states not to recognize same-sex marriages was left intact when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned part of the Defense Of Marriage Act last month.

Some federal agencies, such as the IRS, only recognize same-sex marriages if the couples reside in states where the practice is legal.
