A major endorsement has added some fire to Democratic candidate William Thompson's bid for mayor.
The Uniformed Firefighters Association announced Tuesday it is endorsing the former comptroller.
The UFA previously endorsed Thompson during his unsuccessful run for mayor in 2009.
Steve Cassidy, the union's president, said they continue to stand by Thompson because of his track record of making public safety a top priority.
"The city has nothing unless they have public safety. The economy follows public safety," Cassidy said. "And Bill Thompson recognizes that. Bill Thompson's the kind of leader, he's a demonstrated leader."
"There's no one who will fight more to make sure this city stays safe, to make sure all the residents of this city stay safe, than I will," Thompson said. "I'm going to make sure that our firefighters have the resources that they need, that we have a 911 system that works."
Thompson has recently received a number of major endorsements, including the teachers' and transport workers' unions.
