Quinn Tips Hat To New Yorker Who Brought DOMA Fight

  • Text size: + -

With landmark rulings on the issue of gay marriage in the Supreme Court Wednesday, one of the city's leading contenders for mayor checked in with her thoughts.

Joined by LGBT supporters and advocates at her sides, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and her colleagues celebrated Edie Windsor, the 84-year-old New Yorker who brought the case to the nation's highest court and successfully fought for federal recognition.

"She has changed the world and put us in a situation where we now have the march for marriage equality in every state in the union. We will move forward with that march with the wind at our back, with the affirmation from the supreme court," Quinn said.

"Every day people, who live their lives...out. It is the most powerful weapon that we have," said former State Senator Tom Duane.

Speaking personally, Quinn was in tears as she described the feeling of triumph at the supreme court's decision.

If elected, the speaker would be the first openly LGBT mayor of New York City.
