NY1 has learned that President Barack Obama will announce Friday afternoon his nomination of Jim Comey, the former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, to be the next FBI director.

Comey also served as deputy attorney general under President George W. Bush, and denounced the administration's use of enhanced interrogation techniques on suspected terrorists.

If he is selected and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Comey will replace FBI Director Robert Mueller, who is scheduled to step down in September.
