Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan announced the launch of the Rebuild By Design competition in the East Village on Thursday, encouraging design teams to create innovative solutions to vulnerabilities as the region rebuilds in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
The Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment of the Arts partnered with HUD for the competition.
"We want the brightest minds from across the world to develop real solutions to the very serious challenges we face," Donovan said. "Once we identify the best ideas, we are then going to implement them with community development block grant disaster recovery and other funds."
Designs must be submitted by February and implementation will start in March.
