City Council Speaker Christine Quinn picked up a key endorsement in her run for mayor Monday.

The Queens Democratic Party announced its support for Quinn after party officials met this morning in Forest Hills.

The endorsement is a bit of a surprise because one of Quinn's rivals in the mayor's race, John Liu, is from Queens.

The endorsements are crucial because county committees ensure their candidate gets on the ballot.

"All these candidates for mayor are friends. We know them all very, very well and I imagine there will be support for some of them within the borough. But we believed as an organization it was important to get behind Chris Quinn. We believe she is a woman with vision," said Rep. Joseph Crowley.

"To have such an overwhelming endorsement from such a diverse borough sends a message to me that this campaign is moving forward," Quinn said.

Monday's vote, however, was not unanimous.

A small contingent of leaders from southeastern Queens nominated former City Comptroller Bill Thompson.

Thompson has secured the endorsement of the Bronx County committee.

Also on Monday, the Queens Democratic Party endorsed former City Councilwoman Melinda Katz for Queens Borough President.

Katz is facing a crowded field of Democrats in the September primary. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
