With smartphone theft booming in the city, one state official wants the nation's
top tech firms to do more to fight it.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has sent letters to executives at Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung asking for more information about their security protections.

He is also asking them to offer new ways to prevent thefts.

Police say crime in the city would have gone down last year if not for the sharp rise in thefts of devices like iPhones and iPads.

The New York City Police Department already works with Apple to track down stolen iPhones, but Schneiderman believes tech companies can do more.

In a statement he says in part, "This is a[n] industry that produces some of the most...advanced consumer products in the world. Surely we can...find solutions that lead to a reduction in violent crime targeting consumers."

Schneiderman is also questioning the companies' marketing claims about their products' security features.

He says he doubts the companies are living up to those claims. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
