Republican candidate for mayor Joe Lhota is apologizing after saying that the Port Authority police are nothing more than mall cops.
Lhota made the comment at a debate Tuesday at Pace University.
"I don't think the Port Authority does a good enough job in anything that they do, quite honestly, but clearly, in the area of security, it is not what they should do," Lhota said Tuesday. "Those cops get paid more than NYPD cops, and quite honestly, and I know I'm going to get in trouble for saying this, they're nothing more than mall cops."
After coming under fire, he issued a statement saying, "I regret my unfortunate characterization of the Port Authority Police Department. It was an inappropriate answer that does not accurately reflect the hard work of its officers. I apologize for my insensitive remarks."
An NYPD police union came to the defense of the Port Authority Police this morning.
The union noted that 37 Port Authority police officers were killed in the September 11th terrorist attacks.
The union president says they sacrificed their own lives while trying to bring others to safety.
