Sen. Charles Schumer says federal costs after Hurricane Sandy hit the benchmark of $133 per New York resident this week, meaning that FEMA can recommend the federal government pick up 90 percent of the cost of rebuilding.
"There's no question that Sandy was a storm of major significance. That's why Congress passed $60 billion worth of aid," Schumer said. "Congress' intent was for the feds to pick up as much as possible just as they did for Katrina, Andrew and other storms."
Schumer said following Hurricane Katrina, the federal government paid for 100 percent of rebuilding costs.
