As Washington lawmakers consider comprehensive immigration reform, leaders in the city want to make sure immigrants know the benefits they can take advantage of now.

Elected officials and community leaders held a town hall meeting at a nursing home in Inwood Tuesday.

They're announcing a series of workshops, at which immigrants can learn how to get documents like passports and taxpayer ID numbers.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who is running for mayor, said people need to be ready if immigration reform is passed this year.

"We want to be prepared in New York City to make sure that we support all of our immigrant brothers and sisters, so they are prepared to get all the rights and benefits that this new law will bring them," Quinn said.

"But we have to keep advocating from California to New York," said Manhattan Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez. "There's not immigration reform yet."

An immigration reform bill has been introduced in the Senate, and a separate bill is being drafted in the House.
