Governor Andrew Cuomo has asked Con Edison to put a freeze on its executive bonuses.
Cuomo has also ordered the Public Service Commission to investigate how Con Ed's board reached a decision to reward four top executives for their handling of Hurricane Sandy.
The governor has been critical of how utilities performed before, during and after the storm, describing their service as lackluster.
He adds in a statement, "No ratepayer should pay a single penny for bonuses given to senior utility executives, especially for bonuses awarded for their performance during Sandy."
The four Con Ed executives decided to return a total of $614,000 after Cuomo ordered the investigation.
Con Ed's performance during Sandy is also under review by the Public Service Commission.
