Sen. Charles Schumer is pushing for legislation that would stop suspected terrorists from buying a gun on American soil.

He said on Sunday that currently the National Instant Criminal Background Check System used to check a buyer's criminal and mental health history does not include checking to see if that buyer is on a terror watch list.

As a result, Schumer says suspected terrorists have been cleared to purchase a weapon more than 1,300 times in the last decade.

"It means that even though at least one of the Boston bombers was on a terror watch list, he could've walked into a gun store and bought a gun, no questions asked," said Schumer. "They could've purchased an unlimited amount of just about any type of gun."

Schumer said the legislation will be tacked on to the Senate's upcoming background checks bill as an amendment.
