Governor Andrew Cuomo has nominated a local judge to the state's highest court.

Associate Justice Sheila Abdus-Salaam is being tapped to serve on the state's Court of Appeals.

A graduate of Columbia Law School, Abdus-Salaam began her legal career in 1977 as a staff attorney for Brooklyn Legal Services.

She was a lawyer for the New York City Office of Labor Services and a civil and criminal court judge before being elected to the State Supreme Court in 1993, where she currently serves in the Appellate Division.

If confirmed, she will be the first African-American woman to serve on the Court of Appeals.

She would replace judge Theodore Jones, who died last November.
