City officials are floating a plan to expand East River ferry service to the area's budding technology hubs, and Senator Charles Schumer is calling the idea "The Nerd Boat."

The plan from the New York City Economic Development Corporation calls for extending ferry service to Roosevelt Island, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Astoria and the Upper East Side.

The additional stops would service new technology hubs like DUMBO and Cornell's applied science campus planned for Roosevelt Island.

Schumer is asking the Federal Highway Administration and the state Department Of Transportation to use federal funds to pay for the creation of so-called flex barge landings for the project.

Those landings can be relocated as needed in the event of a storm or other event that affects the mass transit system.

The East River Ferry pilot program began in June of 2011 and has served over 1.7 million commuters. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
